Collaborating on Family History

When you are starting out in family history, the vast amount of records that are available, and the huge task of tracing your ancestors through the centuries, may seem a little daunting. Despite the fact that your research is personal to yourself, and your family's history unique, there are lots of resources and groups available to aid you.

There are a great number of local family history societies which you can join. These societies, under the direction of the Federation of Family History Societies, undertake national projects, such as the creation of the National Burial Index (records from which are available on findmypast). They also specialise in local research, often holding libraries which contain enormously useful resources for anyone with ancestors in their area.

Visit the website of the Federation of Family History Societies to find out more, and to locate your nearest family history society.

The Society of Genealogists is a fantastic resource for all family historians, holding an extensive collection of research material at its central London library, as well as running lectures and courses on all manner of topics surrounding genealogical research.

There are also countless family history fairs throughout the year, whether you are living in London, England or London, Ontario there's bound to be an event near you.

These events can be a great way of meeting other family historians, sharing tips and techniques, and sharing your interesting discoveries. Keep up to date with the latest events and fairs by checking back here.
